OpenMP API Version 5.1 – Paving the Way to Exascale

Authors: Jeff Larkin (Nvidia Corporation), Michael Klemm (OpenMP Architecture Review Board, Intel Corporation)

Abstract: The OpenMP ARB will release version 5.1 of the OpenMP API specification in November 2020. Version 5.1 is the next step for bringing the OpenMP API into the exascale era. The ARB undertook great effort to improve the features that Version 5.0 introduced and add new, powerful features to support the heterogeneous computing world. In this BoF, attendees will get first-hand information from OpenMP ARB members and have a chance to: engage with the representatives of the OpenMP ARB, the vendors and users in an interactive discussion; ask questions; and provide their feedback as users.

Long Description: OpenMP is among the most widely-used parallel programming models in HPC and is the oldest industry standard for parallel programming with compiler directives. This year the OpenMP ARB will be releasing version 5.1 of the specification with a wide range of enhancements and new features since the 5.0 release at SC18. This is the next step for the OpenMP AOI towards exascale. At this year's BOF we will highlight some of the most exciting new features, the latest developments by OpenMP vendors, and successes of OpenMP users. Attendees will get first-hand information from OpenMP ARB members and have a chance to engage with the representatives of the OpenMP ARB in an interactive discussion, ask questions, and provide their feedback as users.

Goal: Our goal is to both educate our users on the latest developments in the OpenMP specification and the implementations from our vendor members and also to solicit feedback from our developers on future specification development and organizational direction. This BOF is historically one of our primary means to communicate directly between our user base and our members.

Format & Readiness for Virtual: Because this year's conference will be fully virtual, we will be adapting our usual BOF format to encourage interactivity from a virtual audience. We will use online survey tools to encourage virtual participants to give live feedback that we will integrate into the discussions with our virtual panelists. Additionally, we will allow virtual participants to ask questions and provide feedback both in written and in a call-in format.

Relevance: The OpenMP API has a very long history with the HPC community and the Supercomputing conference series. OpenMP is among the most widely-known programming models in HPC, supported by many of the vendors and institutions that frequent the conference. The BOF is consistently well-attended and one of the most important events to the OpenMP community.

BOF Agenda: * Welcome & Organization Update (5-10 minutes) * Sub-committee New Features Updates (3-5 minutes each) * Audience feedback to Subcommittee Reps (10 minutes) * Vendor Updates (3-5 minutes each) * Audience feedback to Vendor Reps (10 minutes) * User Highlights (10 minutes) * Open floor to audience (remaining time)
