SC19 Best Student Paper Awardees Interviewed

Be Inspired by Student Research

For its annual Student Paper Challenge, SC19 received 344 total submissions, accepted 87 (a 25.3% success rate), and from that elite list named a single Best Student Paper. “Red-Blue Pebbling Revisited: Near Optimal Parallel Matrix Multiplication” took the top honor. The work proposes a new parallel algorithm for matrix-matrix multiplication that is superior to all of its predecessors from both theoretical and empirical standpoints.

The paper was co-authored by six talented researchers: Grzegorz Kwasniewski, Maciej Besta, and Torsten Hoefler, from the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, and Marko Kabić, Joost VandeVondele, and Raffaele Solcà, from ETH Zurich and Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS). Co-authors Besta, VandeVondele, and Solcà were unable to take part in this interview.

Scott Pakin, a computer scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, oversaw the SC19 Student Paper Challenge, which encompassed a team of 10 reviewers who designated the final winner.

Paper Submissions Are Open

Submit your paper to SC. To be designated as a student paper, the paper must satisfy the following criteria:

  • It must be original work by the student, in which the student is the primary contributor (e.g., responsible for at least 50% of the work).
  • The student must be the sole author or listed as the first author.
  • The student must have full-time student status at the time the work was done. If the work was continued after the student graduated and the paper reports new results since graduation, then it is not eligible as a student paper.
  • Contact information for the student’s faculty advisor must be provided.
  • The student is expected to present the paper at the conference.
