Thien received his bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from Portland State University, OR in 2011. From 2011 to 2014, he was a Quality & Reliability engineer at Intel. He earned his PhD degree in engineering from the Australian National University in 2019.

Thien was the Grand Prize winner of the Microsoft Quantum Challenge (2016). In 2017, he was a research intern at the Atos Quantum Lab, Les Clayes-sous-Bois, France, where he contributed to the development of a novel quantum simulation method. From 2018-2019, he worked for oneZero Financial Systems as a software engineer.

Thien's research interests include quantum programming environment, high-performance quantum simulation, quantum control, and quantum error correction.
