SUMMARY:Postdoctoral Researcher - Center for Artificial Intelligence Inno
 vation
DESCRIPTION:Job Posting\n\nPostdoctoral Researcher - Center for Artificia
l Intelligence Innovation\n\n\n\nThe NCSA Center for Artificial Intelligen
ce Innovation and the High Energy Physics Group in the Department of Physi
cs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invite applica
tions for the position of postdoctoral researcher. The selected candidate
will be mentored by an interdisciplinary team of researchers—Eliu Huerta,
Daniel S. Katz, Vlad Kindratenko, Mark Neubauer, and Zhizhen Zhao—at the i
nterface of physics, artificial intelligence (AI), computer and informatio
n science, open science, and scientific software and data to lead the defi
nition and implementation of findable, accessible, interoperable, and reus
able (FAIR) principles to artificial AI models and data in the context of
high energy physics.\n\nFAIR4HEP is a joint DOE-funded venture between UIU
C, MIT, UMN, and UCSD. The postdoctoral researcher is encouraged to collab
orate with all partner institutions.\nAt the University of Illinois the se
lected candidate will lead research activities towards making data and mod
els available, around the definition and implementation of FAIR principles
for data and models, and the combination of accelerated computing and sci
entific visualization to identify novel connections between data and model
 s. Available resources for this work include the Hardware Accelerated Lear
ning deep learning cluster, the Delta supercomputer, and multiple visualiz
ation teams at NCSA. The selected candidate will be encouraged to particip
ate in internship opportunities offered by Fortune 50® companies affiliate
d with the NCSA Industry program.\n\nThe University of Illinois is a membe
r of the ATLAS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Our ATLAS group
contributed to the Higgs boson discovery and is actively pursuing discove
ry of new physics through analysis of LHC data. This pursuit includes the
development and application of AI-based tools that seek to maximize our di
scovery potential. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen our
efforts by leading the implementation of FAIR principles for HEP data and
AI models that connect strongly to our ATLAS analysis efforts and broadly
impact the potential for discovery in particle physics.\nAmbitious applica
nts from diverse backgrounds and minorities are particularly encouraged to
apply.\n\nA PhD in physics, statistics, computer science, machine learnin
g, data science, or related fields is required. Prior experience in softwa
re development and machine learning is advantageous, but not essential. Su
bmit your application to ai@ncsa.illinois.edu. Complete applications must
include:\n•	Cover letter (no more than 1 page);\n•	CV (1-2 pages recommend
ed, but longer accepted);\n•	Statement of research interests (no more than
  2 pages);\n•	List of publications;\n•	Three reference letters.\n\nThe dea
dline for the receipt of the application is December 1, 2020, but the sear
ch will continue until the position is filled.\n\nThe University of Illino
is conducts criminal background checks on all job candidates upon acceptan
ce of a contingent offer. The University of Illinois System requires candi
dates selected for hire to disclose any documented finding of sexual misco
nduct or sexual harassment and to authorize inquiries to current and forme
r employers regarding findings of sexual misconduct or sexual harassment.
For more information, visit Policy on Consideration of Sexual Misconduct i
n Prior Employment. As a qualifying federal contractor, the University of
Illinois System uses E-Verify to verify employment eligibility.\n\nThe Uni
versity of Illinois is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer.
Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encourag
ed to apply. For more information, visit http://go.illinois.edu/EEO.\n\nFo
r further information regarding our application procedures, you may visit
 www.ncsa.illinois.edu or email NCSA-HR@illinois.edu.\n\nRegistration Categ
