SUMMARY:Postdoctoral Appointee –Data Management for AI
DESCRIPTION:Job Posting\n\nPostdoctoral Appointee –Data Management for AI\
n\n\n\nPosition Description:\n\nThe Argonne Leadership Computing Facility’
s (ALCF) mission is to accelerate major scientific discoveries and enginee
ring breakthroughs for humanity by designing and providing world-leading c
omputing facilities in partnership with the computational science communit
 y. We help researchers solve some of the world’s largest and most complex
problems with our unique combination of supercomputing resources and compu
tational science expertise.\n\nThe ALCF has an opening for a postdoctoral
position in data management targeting at scientific simulation and AI appl
ications. The successful candidate will join the Data Science group, a vib
rant multi-disciplinary team of scientists and High Performance Computing
(HPC) engineers. In the Data Science group, we work at the forefront of HP
C to push scientific boundaries, carrying out research and development in
state-of-the-art data management, machine learning and statistics techniqu
es. With the advancement of Exascale systems and the variety of novel AI h
ardware designed to accelerate both training and inference, the ALCF is st
udying the application of these techniques to a variety of our science app
lications, including but not limited to: Computational Chemistry, Plasma P
hysics, High Energy Physics, analysis of Light Source data such as that fr
om the Advanced Photon Source, Biology, Astronomy, and other science disci
plines. The chosen applicant will have a rare chance to work on exascale s
upercomputing systems and novel AI hardware to help solve significant real
-world problems using machine learning and deep learning. ALCF researchers
work in a highly collaborative environment involving science application
teams, academia and industry, as well as other national labs and agencies,
to solve some of the world’s largest and most complex problems in science
and engineering.\n\nWe invite you to apply for this postdoctoral position
to work on development and scaling of the I/O software stack on supercomp
uting systems. You will provide technology vision, research, development a
nd support to efficiently read, write and manage large-scale datasets bein
g produced by computational simulations, experiments and observations. You
will develop and implement strategies to optimize data management and mov
ement to exploit the underlying system architecture and for application ne
eds. You will work in a highly collaborative environment involving science
application teams, academia, industry as well as other national labs and
agencies.\n\nPosition Requirements:\n\nA recent PhD in a physical science,
computer science, or engineering or related field.\nComprehensive experie
nce programming in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, and P
ython\nExperience with machine learning methods and deep learning framewor
ks, including Tensorflow, Pytorch.\nExperience in heterogenous programming
and GPU programming in the machine learning context is valuable.\nExperie
nce with MPI and parallel I/O such as MPI-I/O and with portable data forma
ts such as HDF5 on systems using Lustre and GPFS filesystem.\nExperience i
n I/O profiling and performance analysis.\nAbility to create, maintain, an
d support high-quality software is essential. The successful candidate wi
ll be expected to work with and contribute to domain-specific software and
models. Experience with version control software such as git is essentia
l.\nGood communications skills and previous experience in writing technica
l papers and presentations at national and international symposia is expec
ted.\n\nAbility to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, I
ntegrity, and Teamwork.\nAs an equal employment opportunity and affirmativ
e action employer, and in accordance with our core values of impact, safet
y, respect, integrity and teamwork, Argonne National Laboratory is committ
ed to a diverse and inclusive workplace that fosters collaborative scienti
fic discovery and innovation. In support of this commitment, Argonne encou
rages minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities to app
ly for employment. Argonne considers all qualified applicants for employme
nt without regard to age, ancestry, citizenship status, color, disability,
gender, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, national or
igin, pregnancy, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status or any
other characteristic protected by law.\n\nArgonne employees, and certain
guest researchers and contractors, are subject to particular restrictions
related to participation in Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Programs
, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.
