SUMMARY:PAW-ATM - Introduction: The 3rd Annual Parallel Applications Works
 hop, Alternatives To MPI+X
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\n\nPAW-ATM - Introduction: The 3rd Annual Parallel Ap
plications Workshop, Alternatives To MPI+X\n\nMorris, Chamberlain, Badia\n
\nArchitectural hierarchy and heterogeneity make programming supercomputer
s challenging. In practice, HPC applications tend to be written using a m
ix of programming models, such as C++, MPI, CUDA and/or OpenMP; each of wh
ich is becoming more complex over time. This negatively impacts the costs
of developing, maintaining and porting HPC applications.\n\nMeanwhile, al
ternative HPC programming models strive to improve things by raising the l
evel of abstraction, incorporating modern features and/or leveraging the r
espective strengths of programmers, compilers and runtimes. These alterna
tives take the form of new languages (e.g., Chapel, Regent, XcalableMP), f
rameworks for large-scale data science (e.g., Arkouda, Dask, Spark), or ex
tensions to existing languages (e.g., Charm++, COMPSs, Fortran, Legion, UP
C++).\n\nPAW-ATM is a forum for discussing HPC applications written in alt
ernatives to MPI+X. Its goal is to bring together applications experts an
d proponents of high-level languages to present concrete example use cases
of such alternatives, describing their benefits and challenges.\n\nRegist
